After seeing this, I decided not to import my blog into facebook anymore. I prefer not to give them unlimited and total rights & access to everything I write on my blog, thanks.

I had misgivings about joining Facebook, but I have so much of my information on the internet already through god knows how many ways, I figured this wouldn’t really make much of a dent. There is a privacy checkbox area you can check in Facebook that disallows them to legally share your information with other networks. How effective it is, who knows?

oh shit. I can’t believe this. You know, the CIA has a lot of people associated with it. There’s a nut who believes the same kind of bull about Global Voices because EthanZ is somehow affiliated with the CIA.
I’m officially removing “someone invested in [company] who was on a board with someone who was once on a board of a company that once had dealings with the CIA who do bad things” from my list of reasons why I might distrust [company]. Such a vague conspiracy theory in no way makes me paranoid about the FB policy, which is overbearing but TOTALLY standard legalese for “your stuff is going to show up on the website in the ways you expect, according to the rules as you can investigate and see for yourself”. Didn’t we go over this with YouTube?
sort of, but as boris and karl will tell you: it’s OK that these companies are collecting this data, but just be sure you are aware of what they are collecting when you are using them.
so, is it much different than me publishing this info on my own site? not really, but it’s a question of choice & control.
in any case, the right wing stuff is … whatever … but irrelevant. the main thing is what facebook achieves, which is to get all your contacts and enable mapping of so much of your life, if you allow them to.
I’ve stopped importing my blog posts and Flickr photos into Facebook too, for the same reason — I will NOT hand over any reuse rights to Facebook or anyone else. (Creative Commons notwithstanding — but that’s something else altogether.)
Regarding the gathering of information, it’s true that all this info is already out there. But you know, it’s one thing to know that your neighbors might be peeking in your window. It’s another thing to stuff all your documents into their mailbox along with a note saying “here you go, take whatever you want.”
I was suspicious right off the bat when signing up with Facebook. They wanted me to put in the login name and password for my email! Login and password! As if!
yes… plus the default is to import your whole email address book. that’s what got my back up to start.
