I started LibriVox.org in August 2005 with the humble ambition of getting volunteers around the world to make digital audio recordings of every exisiting public domain book, and offer them free to the world on the net. I got 13 people to join on in the first day of the project, and the first book was Joseph Conrad’s Secret Agent.
Things tootled along for a while, and then Boing Boing came along, and that day, 10,000 visits later, the project became something very different. We now have about 1,100 completed works, 400 works in progress; we have 18 different languages, and some 1,600 contributors. All available for free.
